Starmer backs UK frigate push for Denmark

High-level UK engagement signals export intent, but Copenhagen’s programme remains undefined, with political timing and potential Nordic cooperation shaping the outcome.

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is personally backing efforts to secure a Danish order for Type 31 frigates, as London intensifies defence-industrial engagement with Copenhagen.

According to UK Defence Journal, the UK government is working at a high political level to advance a potential deal centred on Babcock’s Arrowhead 140 design, with construction likely at the Rosyth shipyard in Scotland.

Denmark is expected to procure around three frigates to replace ageing capabilities, although the programme structure may evolve to include domestic industrial participation.

However, Denmark has yet to translate political intent into a defined procurement pathway, and no decision is expected before a new government is formed.

Danish defence minister Troels Lund Poulsen has indicated that Copenhagen is open to exploring cooperation with Sweden.

For the UK, a Danish order would reinforce momentum behind the Type 31 programme, already selected by Poland and Indonesia, and strengthen the industrial outlook for British shipbuilding.

The effort reflects a broader UK strategy to expand naval exports and deepen defence ties across northern Europe, as regional allies increase maritime investment in response to a more contested security environment.
